Art and Design

Art and Design in the Primary Department is often linked to the Humanities or Science projects being studied e.g. the children may be working on pictures or models of animals as part of Habitats as the Science topic.

The children work with a range of media in 2 and 3 dimensions. They are sometimes shown how to perform a particular technique in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form or space. At other times they explore for themselves and find out what effects can be achieved. They may be engaged in observational work or be working from their imagination.  

Children are shown works by diverse artists such as children’s illustrator Lauren Child, or Monet, or William Morris. The children may produce work inspired by these artists, perhaps in a similar style.

The children are encouraged to give constructive comments on their own and others’ work.

In Key Stage 3 students receive 2 lessons per week in mixed ability classes. The 2 hours are shared between Art and DT.

Students are encouraged to develop their creativity and ideas, and increase proficiency in their execution. They are encouraged to develop a critical understanding of artists, architects and designers, expressing thoughts about their own work.

Students are taught:

  • to use a range of techniques to record their observations as a basis for exploring their ideas
  • to use a range of techniques and media, including painting
  • to increase their proficiency in the handling of different materials
  • to analyse and evaluate their own work, and that of others, in order to strengthen the visual impact or applications of their work
  • about the history of art, craft, design and architecture, including periods, styles and major movements from ancient times up to the present day.

In KS4 students can achieve entry level and level 1 and 2 qualifications.

Design and Technology

Design and technology in the Primary Department provides the children with a wealth of opportunities to learn and apply skills and techniques to enable them to create a wide range of products. Projects are often linked to Humanities or Science topics e.g. making ‘Viking’ shields in a History topic. The children work on a wide range of products requiring very different skills e.g. using an electrical construction set to make a moving vehicle; using ‘i stop movie’ to make a film; or sewing an embroidery.

Children are encouraged to think of their own ideas for projects and are given a level of support appropriate to their needs. They discuss their ideas and, as able, draw sketches, write notes, make prototypes. Some tasks are adapted for individuals as necessary. They may need to draw upon their knowledge and understanding of other subjects to achieve the task, e.g. measuring.

Children investigate existing products relevant to a project e.g. looking at a range of different chairs within school and online before thinking how they can make a chair for a doll from a range of items provided within the classroom or that they can request.

The children are encouraged to say how well the designs work and how appealing they are.
